SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Freshman Amanda Becker won her singles match, but it wasn't enough as the Gonzaga University women's tennis team was defeated by the University of Portland, 4-1, on Sunday morning at the West Coast Conference Championships. The Bulldogs ended their season with an 8-16 record, placing eighth in the WCC.
Portland won the doubles point with an 8-4 victory by Sanja Indic and Cristin Sammis over Sirrah Williams and Angela Fry in the No. 1 spot. The Pilots Lindsey Griffin and Alyson Tyson won their match against Kendall Bates and Becker, 8-3, at No. 2. Christie Feyen and Jaclyn Soltysik left their match unfinished against Bulldogs Erin Humphrey and Sydney Lederhouse.
Portland then won three-of-six singles matches starting at the No. 1 spot with Sammis defeating Fry, 6-4, 7-6. Becker then claimed GU's first win of the WCC Championships with her 6-2, 6-3 win over Indic in the No. 2 spot. At the No. 3 spot Tyson defeated Gonzaga's Bates 6-3, 6-4. Williams then lost in the No. 4 spot to Soltysik, 6-0, 6-4. Lederhouse and Humphrey did not finish their matches as Portland had already claimed the win.
