EUGENE, Ore. - Gonzaga's offense was a little more potent in the second match of the season but not quite good enough as the Bulldogs fell to South Dakota State University in three games, 30-26, 30-27, 30-26. Three Bulldogs reached double-dig kills led by sophomore Becky Jones with 16 on 37 swings for a .351 attack percentage as GU finished with a .227 team attack percentage and 48 kills for the match. Freshman Michelle Boevers had a big match with 13 kills while senior Lacey Bell added 11.
South Dakota State was just a tad more effective in their attacks finishing with 60 kills and a .323 team attack percentage as Minette Ridenour collected a match-high 22 kills to lead two Jackrabbit players into double-digit kills. Emily Rooney added 10.
Gonzaga fell behind in all three games of the match and could never close the gap as they dropped to 0-2 on the year. South Dakota State improved to 1-1 after an earlier loss to Portland State University. The Bulldogs conclude tournament action on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Portland State.
Setter Heather Dunn did start to control the Bulldogs offense during the match as she passed out 36 assists after passing out 10 during her first collegiate start at setter earlier in the day. Jones was the Zags top defensive player with 14 digs while Bell and Boevers each picked up three blocks for GU. Alecia Douglas dropped in two aces for the second straight match.
Samantha Pearson had 15 digs for SDSU to lead all players while Sara Doschadis had two of the Jackrabbits four aces.
