EUGENE, Ore. - Freshman outside hitter Michelle Boevers is quickly showing why she was one of fourth year head coach Kip Yoshimura's top recruits during his stint at Gonzaga University as the Edmond, Okla., native, powered the Bulldogs to their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon. Boevers connected for a match-high 24 kills and a .327 hitting percentage as Gonzaga slipped by Portland State University in five games, 30-27, 27-30, 28-30, 30-28, 15-13. GU improved to 1-2 while PSU fell to 1-1.
Trailing 12-9 in the final game Gonzaga took advantage of four straight Portland State attack errors to take a 13-12 lead with senior Lacey Bell serving all four points. PSU tied the game at 13-13 before Briawna Mueller picked up the last of her 12 kills to give Gonzaga the lead for good. Portland State had one final attack error to hand Gonzaga the match. The Vikings had 33 errors on the night to go along with 74 kills. Gonzaga finished with 71 kills and a .207 attack percentage.
Boevers was not the only go to player for the Bulldogs during the match as four players finished in double-digit kills. Following Boevers 24 kills was sophomore Becky Jones with 19, Mueller with 12 and Bell with 10. Sophomore setter Heather Dunn continued to find her rhythm as she passed out a match-high 50 assists. Alecia Douglas led three Bulldogs into double-digit digs with 17.
Jessica Brodie led four Vikings players into double-digit kills with 19. Jessica Vanzant added 18. Brodie also added four aces and 10 digs. Both teams finished with 18 blocks.
