No.1 Notre Dame Defeats GU, 4-1

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The top-ranked Fighting Irish of the University of Notre Dame handed the Gonzaga University women's soccer team its second loss of the season in the final game of the Santa Clara adidas Classic Sunday afternoon, 4-1.

With the loss the Bulldogs fall to 2-2-1 and the Fighting Irish improve to 5-1-0 with the win.

Notre Dame jumped out to the early lead in the 12th minute when a Gonzaga player committed a foul in the Gonzaga goal box which set up a penalty kick for UND's Katie Thorlakson. Thorlakson was able to get the ball past Gonzaga's senior goalkeeper Ashley Haugen to give UND a 1-0 lead.

Notre Dame would go on to score three more first half goals to put GU in a 4-0 deficit going into the break. At the 16:19 mark Jen Buczkowski scored UND's second goal when she headed the ball past Haugen off of a corner flick. 16 minutes later Karri Hanks scored the Fighting Irish's third goal on a low line drive and Notre Dame's final goal came at the 34:56 mark when Amanda Cinalli controlled a pass from Buczkowski and scored from 10 yards out.

Gonzaga was able to spoil the shutout for Notre Dame in the 52nd minute. Sophomore Jamie Blanche was able to tally her second goal of the season as she found herself 25 yards out and launched a rocket shot past Notre Dame's goalkeeper Lauren Karas.

Haugen allowed four goals and recorded four saves in taking the loss for the Bulldogs. Karas allowed one goal and recorded two saves in picking up the win for the Fighting Irish.

Gonzaga will return to the pitch on Friday as they host the University of Montana in its home opener at Martin Field. The match is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
