SEATTLE, Wash. - Sophomore striker Nanda McCormick's 12 yard laser strike in the 19th minute gave the Gonzaga University women's soccer team its first-ever victory over the University of Washington in women's soccer, a 1-0 decision at Husky Soccer Field.
The win wraps up a perfect weekend for the Bulldogs as they exorcised a pair of slumps this weekend. GU defeated 20th-ranked Oregon State University 2-0 on Friday, the first win in 12 all-time meetings with the Beavers. Sunday's victory was their first in seven tries against Washington and marked the first time Gonzaga scored a goal against the Huskies. With the win the Bulldogs have now posted four consecutive wins, three consecutive shutouts, and move to 6-2-1, while the Huskies fall to 0-7-2, suffering their sixth consecutive loss.
With the Bulldogs dominating the time of possession in the first period, it wasn't until the 19th minute that McCormick, a Seattle, Wash. native, was able to tally the match's lone goal. Sophomore forward Christine Soma dribbled down the right flank and crossed the ball to McCormick who was un-marked in the left side of the goal box. McCormick corralled the pass and launched a 12-yard rocket shot past UW junior goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen and into the right side of the goal to lift the Bulldogs to the victory.
"This win was huge for our program," said Gonzaga head coach Shannon Stiles. "Two shutout wins over PAC-10 teams is a huge step forward for our program."
The Bulldogs senior goalkeeper Ashley Haugen recorded two saves in the match in picking up her fourth shutout of the season, while her counterpart, Rasmussen, allowed one goal and recorded one save in taking the loss for Washington.
Washington out shot the Bulldogs 10-7 for the match and held a territorial advantage in corner kicks, 5-1.
The Bulldogs are undefeated this season at home and will look to remain unblemished at Martin Field with a pair of matches this upcoming weekend. On Friday, the Bulldogs will return to the pitch and look to move their win streak to five as they host the University of Idaho in a 4 p.m. non-conference match. On Sunday, GU will host Portland State University in an 11 a.m. non-conference match at Martin Field.
