BOILING SPRINGS, NC - The Gonzaga University volleyball team extended its winning streak to five matches after the Bulldogs swept Birmingham-Southern College and Gardner-Webb University to win the Over the Mountain Invitational. Gonzaga improved to 5-2 on the season as they won their first in-season tournament since 2001 when they captured the UNLV Classic in Las Vegas. The five match win streak is the longest for the GU program since 1994 when they won seven in a row near the end of the season.
Gonzaga picked up a hard fought win over Birmingham-Southern winning the match 31-29, 30-27 and 30-23. The Bulldogs combined for a .280 team attack percentage with three players reaching double-digit kills and two players collecting double-doubles. Lacey Bell had 14 kills to go along with 11 digs while Becky Jones added 13 kills and 14 digs. Freshman Michelle Boevers tied Bell with a team-high 14 kills. Heather Dunn passed out 40 assists for GU.
In the second match Gonzaga knocked off host Gardner-Webb in three games with a 30-26, 30-18, 30-9 score. Jones again reached double-digit kills as she recorded 10 against GWU to reach double figures in all four tournament matches. Briawna Mueller was again effective from the middle blocker spot picking up 12 kills on 19 attacks with only one error for a .631 hitting clip. Dunn paced the Zags with 26 assists and 12 digs.
Bell and Jones both earned All-Tournament honors for GU. Complete statistics will be available later on tonight. Gardner-Webb was also hosting football and soccer at home on Saturday night while completing the volleyball tournament.
Gonzaga returns to tournament action next weekend with three matches at the University of Montana. The Bulldogs open tournament action on Friday nigh against the host Grizzlies before facing the University of New Mexico and UC Davis on Saturday.
