LAS CRUCES, NM - Sarah Sheffield shot a final-round 70 Wednesday to tie for 10th and lead Gonzaga University's women's golf team at the Price's "Give `Em Five" Intercollegiate at the New Mexico State University Golf Course.
Sheffield had rounds of 79-74-70 for a 54-hole score of 223 over the 6,319-yard, par 72 layout. She tied with Kelli Dalpes of host NMSU. Sheffield's 70 was the best Bulldog round of the rare three-day format and one of only six sub-80 rounds the Bulldogs posted in the three rounds.
Mary Kate Morgan had the other sub-80 round on Wednesday with a 79 to finish with a 54-hole total of 235 and a tie for 52nd after posting rounds of 76-80 the first two days.
Gonzaga finished last in the 17-team field with a 948 after shooting a 311 on Wednesday. That followed rounds of 324-315.
The host Aggies won the tournament for the first time since 2001 with an 890 and also had the medalist in Lehua Wise who shot 72-72-70 for a 54-hole score of 214 which was good for a two-stroke victory over Ellen Hoeper of the University of Missouri. Baylor University was second in the team chase at 896, followed by second-round leader University of Missouri and first-round leader San Jose State University who tied for third at 897.
The tournament was the last outing of the fall season for Gonzaga.
