SURPRISE, Ariz. - Gonzaga University improved upon its best start since the 1995 season on Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs improved to 5-1 following an 11-5 win over the University of Nevada (0-5) during day two action of the Coca-Cola Baseball Classic in Surprise, Ariz. The Bulldogs have now won five straight following a season opening loss at the University of Texas Pan American. Gonzaga also started 5-1 during the 1995 season as the team finished its final season as a member of the Pacific-10 Conference North with a 29-25 record.
For the second straight day Gonzaga jumped on the board early scoring one run in the second and three runs in the third. The Bulldogs run in the second came on the first of five Nevada fielding errors as GU scored only six earned runs. Gonzaga's second run of the game came on another Wolf Pack error before Bobby Carlson and Shawn Wayt drove in the next two Gonzaga runs in the third.
Nevada scored one run in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to trim the Gonzaga lead to 5-2. Matt Bowman had an RBI single for Nevada in the third while Jordan Opdyke had a solo home run in the third.
The Wolf Pack would go to their bullpen in the top of the sixth and Gonzaga immediately chased reliever Owen Brolsma from the game with four runs on three hits without an out recorded. Jackson Brennan delivered the first big hit with a two-run triple while Zach Woodward and Ryan Wiegand followed with RBI hits. Woodward finished the day 3-for-5, Brennan was 2-for-5 with 3 RBI. Darin Holcomb also had three hits for the Zags.
Bulldogs starter Clayton Mortensen (1-1) worked through the sixth inning allowing seven hits and five runs. Nevada scored three times in the bottom of the sixth with two RBI singles by Leo Radkowski and Trevor O'Sullivan. Matt Fields worked the final three innings for the Bulldogs allowing two hits to pick up his first save.
Ryan Rodriguez (0-2) was tagged with the loss for Nevada. Radkowski was the only Wolf Pack player with multiple hits finishing 2-for-4.
Gonzaga plays No. 2 Oregon State University on Sunday morning to close out the Coca-Cola Baseball Classic.
