Bulldogs Break 6-6 Tie With Late Tally

EDINBURG, Texas - Gonzaga University's baseball team evened its record at 1-1 in the young season with a 7-6 victory over Lamar University on Friday in the Texas Pan American Tournament at Edinburg Stadium.
Gonzaga broke a 6-6 tie with a single run in the eighth inning for the win. Bobby Carlson drew a one-out walk, Ryan Wiegand reached on a fielding error by the third baseman and Shawn Wayt was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Following a strikeout, Zach Woodward delivered a two-out single to center to score Carlson.
The Bulldogs built a 3-0 lead in the second inning, freshman Tyson Van Winkle doubling home a pair of runs for his first collegiate hit and his first RBI as a Bulldog. Van Winkle's two-out double scored Wayt who got aboard on a walk and Woodward who singled ahead of Van Winkle's hit. Jackson Brennan's single scored Van Winkle with the final run of the inning.
The Bulldogs added single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings to build a 6-4 lead, Lamar touching Bulldog starter Patrick Donovan for a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings.
Wayt's single in the third scored Holcomb who led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the fifth inning on a Wayt walk, an Aaron McGuinness single and a Woodward single. Wayt scored on a wild pitch.
A one-out walk to Holcomb walk and a Carlson double in the sixth inning set the table for Wiegand's RBI groundout to second to score Holcomb.
Donovan's wildness - he walked six in six innings - cost him a pair of runs in the third inning. A pair of walks sandwiched around a hit batter loaded the bases and Michael Ambort drew another walk to force in Andrew Gay with the first Lamar run. A groundout to first plated the second run.
A pair of RBI singles in the fourth inning knotted the game 4-4 before the Bulldogs opened the 6-4 lead with the single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
When Donovan opened the seventh inning with a leadoff walk to Jo Jo Haney, Bulldog head coach Mark Machtolf went to the bullpen in favor of Nate Williams. Williams got a groundout and a strikeout before being touched for an RBI single by Collin DeLome. Ryan Baker's infield single and a throwing error by McGuinness at short scored DeLome with the equalizer.
Williams, who posted a 3-2 record and had three saves in 19 appearances out of the bullpen last season, picked up the win with his three innings of relief. He walked two and fanned four.
The Bulldogs continue play in the tournament Saturday when they face Texas State University at 9 a.m. PST, then conclude the tournament Sunday against the University of Northern Colorado in an 8 a.m. PST contest.
