MERIDIAN, Idaho - Sage Suffecool and Stephanie Corey turned in strong first rounds for Gonzaga University's women's golf team Monday at the Bronco Fall Invitational.
A morning frost delay has forced the tournament to revert to a 36-hole format with 18 holes Monday rather than the scheduled 36 with the final 18-hole round teeing off Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. PST, weather permitting.
But once the frost lifted Monday, Suffecool, a sophomore, and the freshman Corey blazed the 6,099-yard, par 72 Spur Wing layout. Suffecool shot an even-par 72 for a four-way tie for second two strokes out of the lead, while Corey was at 1-over 73 and in a four-way tie for sixth and three shots out of first. Suffecool shot 36-36 while Corey went 37-36.
Miki Ueoka of Santa Clara University was the first-day leader at 70.
Gonzaga is in fifth place at 306, 12 strokes out of the lead held by West Coast Conference foe SCU at 294. The Bulldogs are one stroke behind Portland State University for fourth and three shots behind third-place University of Wyoming. Host Boise State University is second at 299.
