SPOKANE, Wash. - Philippe Garre scored his first goal of the season, Scott Barnum had five saves and Gonzaga University held off Cal State Bakersfield down the stretch for a 1-0 men's soccer victory Sunday and the title of the Gonzaga Nike Soccer Classic.

The Bulldogs (3-2-1) won their tournament for the first time in three tries on a chilly, rainy day at Gonzaga Soccer Field.

Oregon State University (3-4-1) scored four second-half goals to break open a close match for a 5-1 win over UMKC (2-3-2) in Sunday's opener. OSU, which lost to CSUB on Friday, finished third while UMKC went 0-2-0 in the tournament.

Four Bulldogs were named to the all-tournament team - defenders Nick Barclay, Tim Muravez and Mitch Boland, along with forward Tye Perdido, the tournament MVP. Also named to the all-tournament team were CSUB's Anthony Snygg, Manny Guzman and keeper Steve Trojanowski, the latter allowing just Sunday's goal in the two matches. Rounding out the all-tournament awards were OSU's Robby Christner and Ryan Callahan, and UMKC's Brian Harris and Bryan Perez.

Garre gave the Bulldogs the only goal they would need when he took Bryan Mullaney's right-to-left cross from deep off the right wing to Garre, who converted the cross from the top of the 6-yard box past Trojanowski. The play began on a pass into the zone by Collin Harrison, who picked up his first point as a Bulldog after transferring from the University of Portland last spring.

Neither team generated much in the way of a scoring threat in the opening half, but the second half was another story. The Roadrunners had three excellent chances to knot the score. The first came at 59:41 when Oscar Coppieters' headers from the top of the six hit the far post. Three minutes later Manny Guzman, who had the goal in Friday's 1-0 win over OSU, drilled a hard shot from 30 yards that went off Barnum's hands and hit the right post. The last came at 87:33 when Towa Manda broke in from the right wing and had a shot from close range stopped by Barnum moving to his left.

Perdido, who had a pair of goals including the match winner in OT in Friday's 3-2 comeback win over UMKC as Gonzaga rallied from a 2-0 deficit, almost gave the Bulldogs the insurance goal they were looking for when he broke down the left wing and launched a shot high to the far post at 65:11.

Gonzaga held a 12-7 edge in shots and Barnum recorded his second shutout in five starts as a Bulldog. Trojanowski had three saves for CSUB. The Roadrunners had nine corner kicks to four for the Bulldogs, seven of CSUB's coming in the second half and four of them in the final 14:00.

Head coach Einar Thorarinsson was pleased with his team's effort.

"Friday we showed character. Today we were resilient and endured," he said. "CSUB is a good team."

Thorarinsson said the Bulldogs did a good job withstanding the late CSUB pressure.

"We could have used up more clock late in the game," he said of the final hectic 14 minutes which saw CSUB control the territorial play. "But they kept coming at us and applying pressure."

In the opener, the Beavers broke open a tight match with three goals in the first 17:35 of the second half to rout UMKC.

Christner gave the Beavers a 1-0 lead at 36:57 with his fifth goal of the season when he took a shot from the top of the box off the left wing to the far post to beat UMKC keeper Ricardo Guerra, forced into the starting role for just the second time this year when Ken Cooper came down the flu Sunday morning.

Daniel Leach, who sat out Friday's opener because of a red card awarded in the previous match, gave OSU a 2-0 lead at 49:56 with his unassisted goal from the top of the box from right side slotted to the near post.

Tim Kelly made it 3-0 at 52:28 with a header from the top of the six to the right side and Christner connected again at 57:35 when he took a thru ball from Callahan and beat Guerra to his left from 16 yards.

UMKC avoided the shutout when Perez scored at 67:16 when he took a cross from Harris wide open in front of the net to beat OSU keeper Mike Miller who had committed to Harris.

Callahan ended the scoring at 79:02 when his cross found the far right post past the diving Guerra.

Gonzaga opens West Coast Conference play next Friday at the University of Portland.
