POST FALLS, Idaho - Gonzaga University's women's golf team persevered through wind and rain Monday to stand tied for third after 36 holes of The Bulldogs and Eagles Invitational at The Links Golf Club.
Gonzaga and Eastern Washington University are the co-hosts.
The Bulldogs shot 315-313 for a 36-hole total of 628 to tie with Western Washington University entering the final 18 holes Tuesday. WWU was the first-round leader at 305. The Vikings' Kaitlin Parker turned in an impressive opening-round 69 over the 6,123-yard, par 72 layout, the only sub-par round of the day. She came back with a second-round 79 for a 36-hole score of 148 and a 2-stroke lead over Danielle Ranallo of Portland State University in the medalist race.
One team of Vikings replaced another atop the team standings in round two. The PSU Vikings, which trailed the WWU Vikings by three shots after the opening round, took advantage of WWU's second-round 323 to move into the lead at 619 after a second-round 311. PSU holds a 3-shot lead over Cal Poly which strung together identical rounds of 311 for 622.
The wind and rain fell throughout most of the morning, and a heavy rain set in about 11:30 a.m. The course was cleared at 1 p.m. because of the heavy rains, and the teams resumed play at 2 p.m., approximately three holes into round two. No lightning ever threatened the golfers.
The Bulldogs got strong outings from sophomores Rachel Sibbitt and Sage Suffecool, and another solid performance from freshman Jessica Howe. Sibbitt shot a pair of 78's for 156 and a tie for 13th, Suffecool shot a pair of 79's for 158 and a tie for 19th and Howe shot 80-79 for 159 and a tie for 21st.
Stephanie Corey, the other newcomer for the Bulldogs this year, rallied for a second-round 77 after an opening-round 83 for 160 and a tie for 26th. Anna Friedhoff rounded out the Bulldogs with 78-85 for 163 and a tie for 37th.
Gonzaga head coach Brad Rickel also has four individuals entered, Lauren Phillips shooting a second-round 75 to go with an 80 for 155 and a tie for 9th.
Tuesday's final 18 holes will be a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. The weather is to clear during the night with only a 10 percent chance of precipitation and winds calm.
"Tuesday should definitely be better than today," head coach Brad Rickel said. "Despite the conditions there were still some good rounds turned in today. I think our top three played well, and Phillips turned in her best round of the fall with her 75."
