Zags Battle Portland Tough, Drop First Round Match

April 17, 2009

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Gonzaga University had Scott Sullivan post a No. five singles win in its 4-1 defeat to third-seeded University of Portland in their first round match of the West Coast Conference Championships Friday afternoon.

Gonzaga (9-14) had two players heading into a third set but Portland's Geoff Hernandez recorded a win at No. four singles over Jake Davis to clinch the deciding fourth point for the Pilots. Portland had taken two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point before taking three of the first four completed singles matches to earn the first round win.

Sullivan recorded a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Bryan Thorp to keep the Zags in the match. Gonzaga seemed to be on its way to a comeback as Stefan Feddersen and Conor Feeney had each won a set in their respective No. 1 and No. 3 matches but Hernandez was able to hold off Davis to clinch the match for the Pilots before Feddersen and Feeney could post wins for the Bulldogs.

Gonzaga will face Loyola Marymount University 8 a.m. Saturday.
