Women's Volleyball Falls To Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's volleyball team stumbled against Pepperdine University Thursday evening as it suffered a 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-12) West Coast Conference loss in Firestone Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs fell to 2-19 overall and 0-5 in league action with their 17th-straight loss, while the Waves improved to 13-5 overall and a perfect 4-0 in conference.

Pepperdine set the tempo of the match with 55 kills and a strong .341 attacking clip while defensively holding Gonzaga to just 28 kills and a .156 hitting percentage. Wave Lilla Frederick was the floor leader with 17 kills, while Emily Cook added 12.

The Bulldogs didn't have any player break double-digits and was led by senior Kelsey Bashaw with seven kills on her 20 attempts. Sophomores Jessie Genger and Kylie Edinger both added six each.

The Waves defense was sharp as well, holding the 62-44 edge in digs and the slight 5-2 advantage in blocks. Stevi Robinson was all over the floor, picking up 20 digs for Pepperdine. Senior libero Allyson Powell was the floor leader for Gonzaga, closing out the match with 16 digs.

Gonzaga stormed out to an early lead in the first set, shocking Pepperdine with a 8-2 lead but a timeout by the Waves to regroup helped them turn the six-point deficit into a four-point advantage with an 18-8 run. The Bulldogs had their best hitting set in the six-point loss, tallying 12 kills and registering two errors on 41 attempts for a .244 hitting percentage.

Pepperdine carried its momentum into the second set, building a quick 9-4 lead and pushing it to an 18-10 advantage. The Bulldogs couldn't overcome the deficit as the Waves has their best hitting outing of the night with 20 kills and four errors on 33 total attempts for a .485 attacking clip.

After the intermission, the Waves continued to roll, holding the Zags to their lowest kill total of the match with just seven on 39 attempts. Cook hit home four of her 12 kills in the final set for Pepperdine and Frederick had two of her high 17.

Gonzaga resumes WCC action Saturday when it plays at Loyola Marymount University. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
