MORAGA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's volleyball team dropped its second-straight West Coast Conference match and 14th-straight as the Bulldogs were outplayed by Saint Mary's College Saturday afternoon at the McKeon Pavilion in Moraga, Calif. The Gaels, who are the reigning WCC Champions and who were picked to finish second in the WCC this season, earned the easy 25-11, 25-19, 25-14 victory to improve to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in conference. The Bulldogs, who last won on Aug. 28, fell to 2-16 overall and are now 0-2 in the WCC with the loss.
"Despite the first set loss, we were playing pretty good in the second set," explained second year head coach Dave Gantt. "But down 12-15 in that set, I called a timeout. When we came out of that timeout, we didn't have the sense of urgency and Saint Mary's had a 7-1 run. We didn't have the right frame of mind to recover and carried over into third set."
Gonzaga was held to just 23 kills, five less than it had against the University of San Diego on Thursday, with senior Schylur Edelman, sophomore Jessie Genger and sophomore Kylie Edinger combining for 15 of the team's 23. Junior setter Denise Van de Mortel passed out 21 assists for the Bulldogs as they connected for a .102 attacking percentage on the day.
Saint Mary's offense was quite different than Gonzaga's as the Gaels finished the match with 49 kills and a .384 hitting clip. Natalie Loos led SMC with 10 kills, while teammates Lauren Corp and Gabby Jolly each added nine kills apiece.
The Gaels held the huge 48-27 advantage in digs and the slight 9-5 edge in blocks. Bulldog libero Allyson Powell finished with a team-high seven digs. Van de Mortel and junior Laura Day each had five digs in the three-set loss.
Edinger was the block leader for the Zags, ending the match with four.
Gonzaga returns to Spokane to open its home West Coast Conference slate this week. The Bulldogs welcome the University of San Francisco to the Martin Centre Thursday at 7 p.m. and Santa Clara University Saturday at Noon.
