CABO CALIFORNIA, Mexico - Gonzaga University's men's golf team is 11th after the opening round of the Cabo Collegiate at Club Campestre Golf Course Thursday, as winds played havoc with the scores.
The Bulldogs shot a 310 over the 6,966-yard, par 71 course. Peter Gullickson and James Fahy each shot 75 to tie for 25th, Erik Krzyzanowski fired a 79, Travis Johnsen an 81 and Brendan Connolly an 82.
Co-host University of Arkansas holds the team lead at 281 for an 11-shot lead over Saint Mary's heading into Friday's second round that has an 8:30 a.m. Pacific Time start.
Sebastian Cappelen of Arkansas is in a three-way tie for the lead with Tyler Torano of Loyola Marymount University and Ji Hwan Park of the University of San Francisco at 3-under par 68.
"We had a 15-mile-per-hour wind today that made the course play a little tougher, but we just didn't play well," said Gonzaga head coach Robert Gray. "Gullickson managed the course in 75 shots but didn't hit the ball well, and James hit the ball decently in his round of 75."
But Gray said the others "didn't have their games today. We worked on some things after the round to get back on track. We can make up some ground if we play like we're capable of over the next two days."
The 54-hole tournament ends with rounds Friday and Saturday in the last fall event for the Bulldogs.
