Gonzales Named Baseball America Freshman All-American

DURHAM, N.C. - Gonzaga University freshman Marco Gonzales has been named to the Baseball America Freshman All-America first team as a utility player, as selected by the staff of Baseball America Tuesday.

Gonzales started 15 games as a pitcher, 29 as a first baseman and two as a left fielder. As a member of the Bulldogs pitching rotation, Gonzales led the West Coast Conference in wins (11), owned a 2.57 ERA in 105 innings pitched. In addition to throwing four complete-games, he finished second in the league in strikeouts (90) behind teammate and fellow left-hander Ryan Carpenter. At the plate, Gonzales batted .291 with 10 doubles and 14 RBI. He recorded 253 putouts, turned in 35 assists and committed only one error for a fielding percentage of .997.

The Southeastern and Atlantic Coast conferences led all leagues with five Freshman All-Americans. The ACC had the most first-teamers (three).
