SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team opened its spring season with a 4-3 come-from-behind win over fellow Jesuit institution Seattle University in a non-conference match Sunday at the Spokane Racquet Club.
Trailing the Redhawks 2-0 with five singles matches remaining, the Bulldogs (1-0) picked up four straight points to complete the rally.
The comeback started at No. 4 singles. Freshman Kylie Peek won the first set 6-0, but her opponent, Anna Lambert, won the second set 6-2. Peek bounced back and won the deciding set 6-4 to receive her team-leading eighth win of the season and earn Gonzaga's first point of the match.
Freshman Katie Edwards opened her No. 2 singles match with Seattle's Katrina Schwab with a 6-4 win in the first set, but Schwab clinched the second set 6-3. Edwards regrouped and won the third set 6-3 to help the Bulldogs tie the match 2-2.
At No. 1 singles, Prue Teitzel dropped the first set to Alexandra Farrar, but the junior came back and won 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead.
Senior Sophie Lantta played through a tough match with Seattle's Corrine Wurden, but the Bulldogs captain claimed a 7-5, 7-5 victory at No. 5 singles to clinch the eventual match-winning point for Gonzaga.
Although the Redhawks won two of the three doubles matches to clinch the lone point earlier in the day, the team of Edwards and Peek led the effort for Gonzaga with an 8-7 (3) victory over Schwab and Wurden at court two.
"It was a good win today. It was a little tighter than what we would have wanted," Bulldogs head coach D.J. Gurule said. "I don't think we played exceptionally well but we did a really good job of fighting back and get the win. That was first and foremost what we wanted to do. Obviously our doubles is something we need to really get a handle on. I think nerves were a big part of the match today, but it was a great to get out of the first match of the year with a win."
The Bulldogs will welcome the University of Idaho to the Spokane Racquet Club Friday at noon.
