RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Gonzaga University men's tennis team continued its momentum in singles play as the Bulldogs downed UC Riverside 6-1 Thursday afternoon.
The Bulldogs took two of three doubles matches over the Highlanders (3-10) to earn the first point on the day. The tandem of Zhia Hwa Chong and Scott Sullivan defeated Kelly Dickson and Kevin Griffin 8-3 at No. 2 doubles to reach the 10-win mark for the second consecutive year. Levin Guillermo and Jake Davis secured the point with an 8-3 win over Simon Peters and Jimmy Roberts at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Nazal cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Felix Macherez to earn his 17th win overall and his third straight. After losing the first set 6-3, Vladimir Mijatovic bounced back to beat Andres 6-4, 13-11 at the No. 3 spot to improve his record to 7-7 on the year. Olivier Jamin also cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Griffin on court four to extend his win streak to three matches.
Chong defeated Dickson 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles to improve to 16-4 on the year. Although he won the first set 6-3, Sullivan dropped the second set 6-3 to Peters, but the senior won the tiebreaker 10-3 to extend his win streak to seven matches.
The Bulldogs return to Palm Springs to close out their four-match spring break tour in Southern California Friday against Boston University. The match is scheduled to start at noon.
