DAVIS, Calif. – The Gonzaga men's tennis team opened play at the UC Davis Fall Invitational with a strong showing in both doubles and singles action on Friday.
In doubles, the Zags picked up two convincing wins to start the day. Jay Fairclough and Giovanni Branchetti cruised to an 8-2 victory, while Oscar Rashed and Gus Krauel followed with an 8-4 win. Tom Dunlop and Diego Herrera battled but came up short, 4-8.
The Bulldogs continued their success in singles play, led by Herrera, who earned a straight-sets win, 6-1, 6-4. Rashed rallied after dropping the first set to take a 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 victory, and Fairclough added another straight-sets win, 7-5, 6-4.
Branchetti, Krauel, and Dunlop each put up strong efforts but fell in their respective matches. Branchetti dropped a 1-6, 4-6 decision, Krauel fell 3-6, 3-6, and Dunlop battled through a tight three-set match before falling 6-4, 4-6, (4-10) in a match tiebreak.
Gonzaga continues play at the UC Davis Fall Invitational on Saturday with additional rounds of singles and doubles competition.
