Bulldogs Continue To Win At EWU Fall Classic

CHENEY, Wash. - It was another great day for the Gonzaga University men's tennis team at the EWU Fall Classic with four players advancing to the semifinals in the red flight and in doubles.

"I am very pleased," head coach Peter MacDonald said. "We came in here to gain experience and win some matches. That is exactly what we have done. The guys are doing a great job."

No. 1 seed in the red flight Alvaro Nazal made quick work in his quarterfinal match against Ethan Vaughn from the University of Montana 6-1, 6-3. Nazal will face fellow Bulldog Hayden Smith in the semifinal after Smith won his quarterfinal match against classmate Vicente Varas 6-2, 6-2.

The other semifinal in the bracket will see No. 3 seed Levin Guillermo take on No. 8 seed Olivier Jamin. Both played well in the quarterfinals; Guillermo beating Will Topp from Seattle University 3-6, 4-3 Ret (inj) and Jamin defeating Jose Bendeck from the University of Idaho 6-7, 7-5, 6-0.

"I like looking at the bracket and seeing our guys in this position," MacDonald said. "We knew there would be some tough matches but we battled through it. Things are setting up for a fun Sunday."

In the white flight, the lone Zag to pick up a victory was Joey Brandt in the quarterfinals over Augustus Orlando from Seattle 6-4, 6-0. Brandt would fall in the semifinal to No. 6 seed Matt Oddonetto from Idaho 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles play, Gonzaga is sending two teams to the semifinals. The pairing of Jack Schoebel and Jamin advanced to the semis after beating Tomas Aranquiz and Kyle Koetie from Eastern Washington University 8-6 followed by another 8-6 win over Alec Marx and Abhinay Mishra from Portland State University.

Schoebel and Jamin with face another Gonzaga duo of Brandt and Nazal Sunday. Brandt and Nazal cruised Saturday by beating Michael Facey and Semion Branzburg from Montana 8-4 and defeating Lukas Kotus and Brent Wheeler from Portland State 8-5.

"Doubles was an area of concern coming into the weekend," MacDonald said. "It is always difficult to see who works well together. I like the progress we made and this will help us get a better feeling for the spring."

The Bulldogs return to the court Sunday for the final day of the EWU Fall Classic.
