BULLDOGS AT WASHINGTON FRIDAY; HOST NEVADA SUNDAY: The Gonzaga University women's soccer team heads to Seattle to battle Pacific-12 Conference member University of Washington Friday. The match is slated for 4:30 p.m. and can be seen on the PAC-12 Network. The Bulldogs close out the weekend hosting the University of Nevada Sunday at 1 p.m.
ABOUT THE WASHINGTON HUSKIES: The University of Washington women's soccer team currently holds a 3-4 overall mark on the year and is on a two-match winning streak. The Huskies are coming off a 2-0 victory over Central Michigan University and a 5-0 blanking of Seattle University. Two of their four losses have come against ranked opponents; a 1-0 setback to then-No. 11 Baylor University and a 1-0 loss against then-No. 7 Wake Forest University. Becca Schoales has scored three of UW's eight goals, while Isabel Farrel has notched four of their nine assists. The Huskies are coached by Lesle Gallimore in her 20th year at the helm.
ABOUT THE NEVADA WOLFPACK: The University of Nevada women's soccer squad is 2-3-2 on the year and is coming off a 3-2 victory over Sacramento State University. The Wolfpack play at the University of Montana Friday, prior to their match with Gonzaga University. Five different players have scored for Nevada this season. All but one goal came unassisted. The Wolfpack is coached by Dr. Melissa Price, in her fourth year at the helm.
JOHNSON TALLIES TWO GOALS IN 3-0 WIN OVER EASTERN WASHINGTON: Gonzaga University women's soccer sophomore Heather Johnson tallied two goals to pace the Bulldogs to a 3-0 victory over Eastern Washington University Tuesday at the Gonzaga Soccer Field. Johnson tallied the Bulldogs first multi-goal match since classmate Sila Tuiofea scored two goals in GU's 2012 season opening 3-1 win over the University of South Dakota. Johnson has now notched four goals in her career.
BAGGERLY SCORES FIRST COLLEGIATE GOAL VERSUS EASTERN WASHINGTON: Gonzaga University women's soccer freshman Karley Baggerly scored her first collegiate goal in the Zags victory over Eastern Washington Tuesday. Baggerly's first goal was the second of the match and came in the 48th minute. Baggerly is second on the squad in shots with 10.
AMY EDWARDS STARTS FIFTH YEAR AT THE HELM: Gonzaga University women's soccer head coach Amy Edwards is in her fifth-year at the helm in 2013. Edwards currently holds a 32-47-4 overall record and is the second winningest coach in Gonzaga history. To see Edwards' full bio, go to GoZags.com.
FIVE DIFFERENT PLAYERS HAVE SCORED FOR GONZAGA: Five different Gonzaga University women's soccer players have scored this season. Two sophomore's, one freshman, one junior and a senior make-up the goal scoring. Sophomore Heather Johnson leads the team with two goals. Two of the six goals have come off setpieces; one a corner kick and one a free kick.
EMILY ECKMANN NOTCHES THIRD CAREER GOAL: Gonzaga University women's soccer senior Emily Eckmann notched the Bulldogs lone goal in their 2-1 setback at Oklahoma State University, Sept. 1. Eckmann's goal in the 69th minute tied the match at 1-1. It was the midfielders third goal of her career and first since her sophomore season.
FRESHMAN SARAH SWANSON SEES FIRST ACTION IN GOAL: Gonzaga University women's soccer freshman goalkeeper Sarah Swanson saw her first collegiate action in the Bulldogs 1-0 setback to Fresno State, Sept. 6. Swanson replaced sophomore Christie Tombari in the 25th minute. She went on to play the final 66 minutes and did not allow a goal.
ZAGS DEFEAT OKLAHOMA 2-1 IN LONE EXHIBITION MATCH: The Gonzaga University women's soccer team battled back to earn a 2-1 victory over the University of Oklahoma in an exhibition match, Aug. 18 at the Gonzaga Soccer Field. The Bulldogs, down 1-0 late in the second half, tallied two goals in the final eight minutes to secure the come-from-behind exhibition win over the Big 12 Conference Sooners. Freshman defender Sarah Carter notched the first goal; a header off a corner kick taken by junior midfielder Tori Lee. Lee then scored the gamewinner off a free kick.
WHAT GONZAGA RETURNED: The Gonzaga University women's soccer squad returned 14 letterwinners in 2013, including seven starters, and adds 11 newcomers and two returning redshirts. The team is led by seniors Emily Eckmann and Ali Ohashi, along with a strong junior class of Tori Lee, Cricket Harber, Katey Pennington, Kasey Rubosky and Jordan Travis. Rubosky, a midfielder, returns as the squad's leader in points and goals, having notched 10 points on four goals and two assists a season ago. Lee, another midfielder, is the Bulldogs returning assists leader, having tallied five as a sophomore.
A TON OF NEW FACES: Gonzaga University welcomes 11 newcomers to its women's soccer team in 2013. The last time the Bulldogs has such a large freshman class was in 2010 when head coach Amy Edwards - then in her second season with the Zags - also welcomed 11 freshman. This year's freshman class consists of four defenders, three midfielders, two forwards and two goalkeepers. They also represent four different states: California, Oregon, Utah and Washington.
COACHES TAB ZAGS NINTH: The Gonzaga University women's soccer team has been selected to finish ninth in the 2013 West Coast Conference season according to a preseason vote of the league's head coaches. The Zags received 22 votes in this year's poll, after losing four starters off a squad that went 8-11-1 and 1-6-1 in the conference a year ago. Santa Clara University was selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2013 WCC title. The Broncos captured all nine possible first place votes, and 81 overall points in the poll.
