MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Gonzaga University women's tennis closed its busy opening weekend of the year at the University of Minnesota Gopher Classic with four victories including a perfect two-for-two in doubles.
"The first fall tournament of the year is always a good opportunity to find out where the team is after summer workouts," head coach D.J. Gurule said. "There were a lot of positives on the weekend. We also saw some things we need to improve on."
Kylie Peek and Samantha Polayes finished the weekend 3-1 in doubles action after a strong performance Sunday. The pair took fifth-place in the Maroon Flight after winning 8-5 over Kelsey Frechette and Aria Lambert (Minnesota).
The Bulldogs success in doubles continued with Isabell Klingert and Franziska Koehler taking third-place in the Gopher Flight. The tandem dropped Emma Waites and Caroline Andersen (Iowa State University) 8-4.
In singles, Peek and Koehler came out on top.
In the "U" Flight Peek came out strong and downed Ffion Davies (South Dakota State University) 6-2, 6-2. The victory gave her 11th-place in her draw. Koehler would take fifth-place in the Maroon Flight with a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Chelsea Bailey (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee).
Klingert had an opportunity to take the title in the Maroon Flight but would fall in the Final 6-0, 6-0 to Lasmin Rosa of South Dakota State.
Both Klingert and Koehler finished a team-best 3-1 in singles matches over the tournament.
"We have a couple days to continue to improve before the next tournament," Gurule said. "We are looking forward to playing at Washington State. We are also very appreciative of the Yates family and their hospitality. This was a special trip to Minnesota."
Melanie Yates, a native of Minnesota, competed Friday in the tournament before withdrawing from play Saturday.
