SPOKANE, Wash. - While the Gonzaga University men's tennis doubles team of Pablo Mosquera Pérez and Nick Kamisar wrapped up its weekend at the Eastern Washington University Fall Classic, junior Alvaro Nazal made final preparations for the 2013 Saint Francis Health Systems ITA All-American Championships.
This preseason Nazal was recognized in the ITA preseason rankings, slotted No. 99, and thus qualified for the annual All-Americans tournament featuring the nation's top players. Nazal is the first Bulldog in program history to be represented in the field.
The Santiago, Chile, native drew Harrison Richmond (51st-ranked, University of Virginia) in the opening round of 128 which is slated to begin Monday. Richmond enters as the fourth overall seed in the qualifying draw.
If Nazal advances, he will face the winner of Manfed Jeske (University of Arkansas) and Danil Zelenkob (George Washington University).
Nazal is guaranteed at least two matches in Tulsa. If he suffers a first round defeat, he will compete in the consolation draw. If Nazal takes his first three matches, he will qualify for the main draw of the tournament which will begin Oct. 3.
2013 marks the ninth straight year that the All-American Championships have been held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the University of Tulsa campus.
Last year, Nazal set the Gonzaga program record for wins in a season. He accumulated 27 victories and was the first Zag named to the first team All-West Coast Conference since 2001.
So far this fall Nazal is 2-1 with a big winner over ITA No. 60 Mate Zsiga (Baylor University). Nazal topped Zsiga last weekend at the Baylor HEB Invitational 6-4, 6-3.
Back in Cheney, Mosquera Pérez and Kamisar were the lone Bulldogs in action Sunday at the EWU Fall Classic. The duo had advanced to the finals of the White Doubles Flight where they would unfortunately fall to Kenny Dodd and Javier Martin (Montana State University) 8-4. The loss was the first for the pair this fall.
With Nazal in Tulsa, the remainder of the GU team will continue to work out and practice in Spokane. The last fall tournament for the Zags is the ITA Northwest Regionals in Moraga, Calif., starting Oct. 18.
