TUCSON, Ariz. - After its two win season opening weekend in Spokane, the Gonzaga University men's tennis team came up short in its first true road dual against the University of Arizona at the Reffkin Tennis Center Friday.
Arizona took the match 7-0 to improve to 5-4 on the season. The Zags suffered its first defeat and are 2-1 overall.
The Wildcats claimed the first two doubles matches to take the doubles point. The No. 1 matchup of Jack Schoebel and Hayden Smith against Fredrik Ask and Kieren Thompson went unfinished because Arizona clinched the point. Arizona was leading that contest 5-3.
The other doubles finishes saw No. 2 Vicente Varas and Vladimir Mijatovic falling to Sumeet Shinde and Naoki Takeda 6-2; while Nick Kamisar and Pablo Mosquera Pérez fell 6-0 to Mario Uruidi and Matt Dunn.
Arizona went on to take the No. 4, 5 and 6 singles matches to earn the match sealing fourth point. In those matches Muzeen Ismath dropped to Will Kneale 6-1, 6-0, Schoebel lost to Takeda 6-1, 6-3; and Vicente Varas was defeated by Urquidi 6-2, 6-4.
Despite Arizona having the victory in hand, the rest of the singles matches were played out including a thriller of No. 1's between Smith and Asik. Smith went down in the first set 6-2 before mounting a terrific effort in the second. The match was decided by tie breaker where Asik edged out Smith 11-9.
The day concluded with No. 2 Mijatovic falling to Shinde 6-4, 6-3; and No. 3 Kamisar going down to Thompson 6-1, 6-4.
The Bulldogs weekend in Arizona concludes tomorrow as GU will face Northern Arizona University at 10 a.m.
