SPOKANE, Wash.—Just a week after the women's tennis team competed at the ITA Northwest Regionals, the Gonzaga University men's tennis team will get the same opportunity to play against the top players from all over the Pacific Northwest at the ITA Northwest Regionals this weekend at Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Palo Alto, Calif.
Six Zags will compete in the regional tournament this weekend, all playing in the singles competition and teaming up with a fellow Zag in the doubles. Vicente Varas and Sergio Chip will form the Zags' first doubles team, Vladimir Mijatovic and Joey Brandt make up the second, and Alvaro Nazal and Nick Kamisar will play together as the Zags' third doubles pair.
The Zags will square off against the top Division I players from Washington, Oregon, and Northern California. Competitors from California, Eastern Washington, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Oregon, Pacific, Portland, Portland State, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Stanford, UC Davis, and Washington will all meet at Palo Alto and compete for the Northwest title.
This will be the Bulldogs' second tournament of the season and first since the EWU Fall Classic in late September. The Zags saw tremendous success at the EWU Fall Classic as both Kamisar and Nazal reached the final match of the top singles bracket with Kamisar coming away as the tournament champion. The two teamed up to win the top doubles bracket as well.
The ITA Northwest Regionals will go from Friday, Oct. 17 until Tuesday, Oct. 21 and are hosted by Stanford University. Play on Friday will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the first round of doubles play.
