Men's and Women's Rowing Travels to Head of the Lake

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's and women's rowing teams travel to Seattle, Wash., for the annual Head of the Lake, hosted by the Lake Washington Rowing Club.

Racing kicks off at 8 a.m. PT with the Men's Collegiate/Open 8+, followed by the Men's Collegiate JV and 3V as well as the Women's Championship 8+ soon after. The field includes many of the collegiate teams from the northwest, including Washington, Oregon, Oregon State and Washington State.

On the men's side, Gonzaga's Varsity 8+ is coming off back-to-back wins over Washington State at home on the Spokane River. The Zags defeated WSU by 1.95 seconds two weeks ago, then upped the distance with a 12-second win this past Saturday.

"Head of the Lake is the premier race for us in the fall, and we get a chance to see Oregon State who we have a good rivalry with especially in the spring," men's head coach Dan Gehn said. "As I said before our first race of the year, this will be a challenge for us not being on the water until October, but I have good feeling about how we have progressed since then. "

For the women, head coach Glenn Putyrae's squad has made big strides this fall. Last weekend on the Spokane River, GU kept it close with WSU, ultimately coming in second by seven seconds. The continued progress will be put to the test again this weekend.

"We are excited to see how we stack up against the field," Putyrae said. "The Head of the Lake is a deceptively difficult course with long, straight shots and a huge 180 degree turn towards the finish - there are several places where a coxswain can shave seconds if they perform well in both disciplines."
