SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's tennis team improved to 4-1 Saturday after taking down in-state rival Eastern Washington University 5-2 at the Stevens Center.
Gonzaga won five of the six singles matches with three of those coming in three sets.
The dual clinching point came at No. 6 with Pablo Mosquera Pérez going to three sets with Matt Boyle. Mosquera, 3-0 at the No. 6 position, had his way in the decisive set and won the match by a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 score.
The other three set victories came at the No. 1 and No. 4 positions. On court 1, Hayden Smith went toe-to-toe with Robert Dula before prevailing 6-5, 5-6, 6-4. Jack Schoebel played at No. 4 and went the distance with Wacil Bendjelti 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.
Nick Kamisar and Vladimir Mijatovic were the first two to polish off victories in their matches. Kamisar, playing No. 3, went over Eduardo Bringold 6-2, 6-1; while No. 2 Mijatovic downed Luke Thompson 6-4, 6-2.
Both Kamisar and Mijatovic are 4-1 this spring.
Eastern Washington had the early edge in the match by taking the doubles point. The Gonzaga No. 1 duo took their match however. Shoebel and Smith made quick work of Dula and Bringold 6-2.
EWU's other point came at No. 5 singles. Stefan Farrar defeated Vicente Varas 6-2, 6-3.
Next for the Bulldogs is a doubleheader on Feb. 15. GU welcomes Portland State University and Pacific University Oregon to the Stevens Center for duals at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
