MAUI, Hawaii—The Gonzaga University women's tennis team continued play at the Maui Invitational Saturday, wrapping up two more doubles sessions and a round of singles matches at the tournament held on the Hawaiian island of Maui.
Each Zag duo came away with one win apiece in morning doubles. Kylie Peek and Franziska Koehler came away with the biggest doubles victory, taking out Hawaii Pacific's team of Vivian Hansen and Sofia Tavitian by a score of 6-3 in session one. Also winning in the first round of contests Saturday, Katie Edwards and Samantha Polayes prevailed 7-6 (4) in a tight match against the Sharks' Lea Kruse-Utermann and Lorena Gheorge.
Although Melanie Yates and Alex Bourguignon lost their session one contest, they rebounded for a 7-5 victory against Hansen and Kristyna Hancarova of HPU in session two.
GU's pairs of Edwards/Polayes and Peek/Koehler both fell 6-4 in their second doubles matches.
Singles play didn't go the Zags' way, however, as no Zag came away with individual victory. Peek, playing her first singles contest of the weekend, was the only one to play three sets, winning the middle set in a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 loss to Victoria Matejevic of Washington State. In the Zags' other Hawaii Flight matchup, Polayes forced an extra game in the first set but fell in the end 7-5, 6-2.
In the Wailea Flight, Koehler forced the Cougars' Holly Monahan into a first-set tiebreak but couldn't close the deal, losing 7-6 (6), 6-4. Yates, also playing her first singles match of the weekend, lost 6-2, 6-2 to her WSU opponent.
Rounding out the day, both Bourguignon and Edwards suffered a loss in the Maui Flight, the tournament's top flight. Bourguignon dropped to 1-1 in the competition while Edwards took her second loss of the weekend.
The Zags wrap up the Maui Invitational - and the pre-season tournament schedule - Sunday, January 11 with one session of singles play. Those individual matches will begin at 1:00 p.m. Pacific, again on the island of Maui.
