OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Sean Walsh had his second top-five finish already this season after tying for second at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate Tuesday.

Walsh led Gonzaga to a tie for third place on the team leaderboard. The Zags finished with their lowest 54-hole total of the season at 888 (+24). GU was 13 strokes over par (301) in the third and final round. The Bulldogs entered the day in a tie for second at 11-over (587). Their first round 291 (+3) was the lowest 18-hole team total so far this season.

"It was an exciting day competing for the title," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "We got off to a bad start but hung in there and we were just a couple of shots back of first after the front nine. Unfortunately, we made too many bogeys on the final nine and couldn't keep pace with the leaders.

"The team put forth a great effort but it just wasn't our day to get the win. We may have lost a few shots to nerves today but getting the experience to compete for a win this early in the season will only benefit us the rest of the year."

In the third round, Walsh made 15 pars and had three bogeys. He carded a 75 (+3). The Keller, Texas native started the round in second place at five-under (139). The senior went two-over on the front-nine and one-over on the back.

"Sean got another great finish despite really struggling with his game today," Gray said. "After making 11 birdies the first two rounds, he didn't get one today but still managed to post a score to keep him in second. His experience and hard work really shows on days like today."

Ryan Gaske had his best finish of the season in a tie for 15th place. The junior was two-over on the front-nine and back-nine. He finished four-over (76), with a three-round total of 223 (+7). Gaske's first round 68 (-4) equaled the lowest round in the 69-golfer field.

Angus Montgomery carded the Zags' lowest round Tuesday at 74 (+2). He made 12 pars and two birdies in the third round. The junior finished tied for 29th at 226 (+10). Will Brueckner made three birdies on the front-nine and finished the final round at four-over (76). He tied for 40th at 12-over (228).

Tyler Munetake's five birdies were the most by a Bulldog in Round 3. Four birdies came on the back-nine, which he closed at one-under. The freshman also carded a 76 (+4) in the third round. His 232 (+16) total tied him for 52nd.

As a team, Gonzaga made 43 birdies and went seven-under (4.88) the course's par-five holes. Walsh was two-under (3.93) on the par-four holes. He made 35 pars and 11 birdies, which were both the third most in the field.

After carding back-to-back 69's in the first two rounds Monday, Wichita State's Grant Bennett finished with a 68 (-4) Tuesday. He took medalist honors with an eight-stroke lead over the field. Air Force's Brenden Bone tied with Walsh in second. He matched his second round 71(-1) with a 71 (-1) again in the final round.

Wichita State held off Air Force for the team title. The Shockers were five-over (293) in Round 3 and finished one-stroke ahead of Air Force with a total of 878 (+14). The Falcons' 292 (+4) was the lowest team total Tuesday. The tournament host, Missouri-Kansas City tied with Gonzaga for third.

"We had more consistency across the board with our scores today, which we struggled with the first two rounds," Gray said. "We'll need to get better at that going forward. Fortunately, we have a few weeks to work on the things that have been giving us trouble, before we head to our final event."

The Zags have a break until traveling to Lahaina, Hawaii, for the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic on Nov. 6-8. It will be GU's final event of the fall season.
