STOCKTON, Calif. -- Ashley Arnett's goal in the 82nd minute proved to be the game-winner in Pacific's 2-1 victory over Gonzaga women's soccer Friday.
The Tigers' (2-8-1, 1-2-0 West Coast Conference) first league win of the season snapped a three-game losing streak. The evenly contested match featured a combined 33 shots, with Gonzaga having the slight 12-11 edge. The Bulldogs put six shots on frame, compared to Pacific's five. Both teams committed five fouls.
Savannah Van Citters' second collegiate goal, and her first of the season, opened the scoring 19 minutes into Friday's game. The sophomore defender beautifully bent a free kick around the Tigers' wall just outside of the 18-yard box. Her goal from 25 yards out was her first since playing Idaho last year on Aug. 31.
The goal led to Gonzaga's first halftime lead this season. It was also the second goal the Zags have scored in the first half in 2015.
Six minutes into the second half, Pacific's Mati Long was tripped up in the box and the Tigers were given a penalty kick. Alex Hussar converted on the penalty kick for her second goal of the season.
Arnett capitalized on an opportunity with eight minutes left in the game, and slid a ball into an empty GU net for the game-winner. It was the freshman's first collegiate goal.
Lena Perry made five saves in the net for Pacific. Christie Tombari stopped three Tigers' chances. The Zags' Heather Johnson took a game-high six shots, placing three on goal. Gonzaga (2-7-4, 1-2-0 WCC) took five corner kicks, while Pacific had two.
The Bulldogs travel to Moraga, Calif., for a matchup with Saint Mary's Sunday. The Gaels (6-6-2, 1-2-0) lost to Portland Friday, 1-0. Gonzaga and SMC are scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
