LAHAINA, Hawaii -- Gonzaga men's golf student-athlete Sean Walsh is tied for fourth after the first round of the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic Friday.
Walsh carded a 67 (-4) in the opening round. His total matches the third-best round in program history, and was a stroke off of his personal best 66 shot earlier this season during his medalist finish at the Saint Mary's Invitational.
After opening the day with back-to-back bogeys, Walsh picked the strokes back up with an eagle on Hole 9. He then opened the back-nine birdieing three of the first four holes. He would finish the back-nine at one-under par (33). His front-nine total was 34 (-3). The Keller, Texas native matched the most birdies on Day 1 with six. His 3.67 average and four-under total on the course's three par-five holes was the best in the 102-golfer field. Walsh was also two-under on par-four holes.
As a team, Gonzaga is tied for 11th at seven strokes over par (291). The Zags' 291 total matches their second-lowest output this season.
Will Brueckner is tied for 51st at three-over (74). He finished with three birdies and nine pars. Ryan Gaske and David Ganz are both tied for 62nd. They both ended their rounds at 75 (+4). Ganz had 15 pars in the round, matching the second-best total in the tournament. Angus Montgomery was seven-over (78) on Day 1. He is tied for 84th.
"It was a slow start for us as a team today," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "We've been getting off to a slow start all fall and we did so again today. But, we've bounced back in the other events and that's what we plan to do tomorrow. Sean posted another great round with a solid finish by making birdies on his final two holes. While Sean putted well today, making six birdies and an eagle, the rest of the team just didn't get the putts to fall.
"We had plenty of chances to get birdies but only came away with seven birdies among the other four team members. If we can get the putters working, we can make a big jump the last two days. We're definitely hitting the ball well enough to post numerous scores under par."
Oklahoma leads the team leaderboard. The No. 13 Sooners are at eight-under (276), followed by No. 35 North Carolina State three strokes back.
Rylee Reinertson of Oklahoma and Long Beach State's Jonny Hogan top the individual leaderboard. Both golfers shot six-under par (65) Friday. The Sooners' Brad Dalke is third at five-under (66).
Round 2 begins at 10:30 a.m. Pacific Time Saturday. Live scoring from the Ka'anapali Golf Course will be available on GoZags.com.
