PORTLAND, Ore. - The Gonzaga women's basketball team won their 11th straight game, and remained unbeaten in West Coast Conference play with a 85-63 win at Portland Saturday.
The Bulldogs (17-4, 10-0 West Coast Conference) held Portland to 38 percent shooting from the field, while making a season-high 55.2 percent of their shots. GU got 34 points off of its bench, and had a 34-10 advantage in points off the bench. Gonzaga is now 12-0 this season when its bench outscores its counterpart.
Five Zags finished in double-digit scoring led by Sunny Greinacher's 18 points. The senior made eight of her 13 shots from the field. Emma Wolfram added 13 points, while Elle Tinkle had 11. Keani Albanez also chipped in 10 points. Shelby Cheslek scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Albanez, Tinkle, and Shaniqua Nilles all had four assists. Lindsay Sherbert scored her first points after returning from a knee injury. The senior had eight points, including a pair of three-pointers.
A 10-0 Gonzaga run late in the first half stretched a 28-26 game, to 38-28 with 1:34 remaining in the opening half. The Zags led 40-31 at halftime. Portland closed the gap to 44-40 in the second half, and 64-56 with 6:25 remaining in the game. Gonzaga then closed the game on a 21-7 run, making its last seven shots from the field.
Portland outrebounded GU, 36-32, grabbing 17 offensive rebounds. The Pilots had an 18-15 edge in second-chance points. The Zags controlled the paint, outscoring UP, 34-18, in the paint. GU committed nine turnovers in the first half, but only three in the second. Portland finished with 16 turnovers. Both teams were 8-for-21 from behind-the-arc. Gonzaga was 13-of-18 from the free-throw line, while Portland was 9-of-15.
The Pilots (4-17, 2-8 WCC) had three players score 14 points. Cassandra Brown made three of her five three-point attempts and had 14 points. Kari Luttinen and Jasmine Wooton also chipped in 14. Brown and Cassandra Thompson pulled down seven rebounds.
The Bulldogs bring their 11-game win streak home after three straight road games. Gonzaga hosts Santa Clara Thursday at 6 p.m. The Broncos (7-12, 2-9) fell at home to BYU Saturday, 58-56. Live video of Thursday's game will be available on GoZags.com. Live radio will be available on The Key 1050 AM.
