Zags Move Up on Final Day of Bay Area Intercollegiate

FAIRFAX, Calif. — Senior Alice Kim picked up her first top 10 finish of the season Tuesday as the Gonzaga University women's golf team moved up one spot on the leaderboard of the Bay Area Intercollegiate, held at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif.

Kim kept hold of her spot in the top 10, finishing tied for 10th with a season-best tally of 214 (+1). The finish is also her highest of the year, beating out her previous by one spot on the leaderboard. Kim carded a 2-over-par 73 during the third round.

Also claiming a top 25 finish at the Bay Area, Ciera Min showed consistency throughout the entire tournament, turning in three consecutive rounds of 73 (+2). She finished in a tie for 17th place with a total of 219 strokes (+6). The finish is her best of the spring season and sixth among a tournament's top 25 of the school year.

Also climbing up the leaderboard Tuesday, Dania Uy rose eight spots into a tie for 24th after shooting 73 (+2) as well during the final day. The freshman improved her score by a stroke during each round, ending with a tournament total of 222 (+9). She also posted her best finish of the spring season.

Han Wu also improved incrementally throughout the tournament, cutting two strokes off her previous round's tally each time. In the final round, Wu shot 74 (+3), climbing into a tie for 48th with a three-day score of 228 (+15). The score is just one stroke off her lowest three-round mark of the season, that coming Feb. 23-24 at the UC Irvine Invitational.

Rounding out the Gonzaga lineup, Raychelle Santos finished in a tie for 68th with a three-day total of 244 (+31). She shot 84 (+13) during the final round. Competing in the tournament as an individual, Angela De Villa finished in 71st with a score of 259, 46 strokes above par. The Bay Area Intercollegiate was De Villa's first tournament of the spring.

As a team, the Zags climbed into seventh, finishing with 883 strokes (+31) after carding 293 (+9) on the day. They beat out West Coast Conference rivals San Francisco and BYU by 13 and 22 strokes, respectively. Washington completed the wire-to-wire victory with a score of 834 (-18), and the Huskies' Jennifer Yang tied with Esther Lee of Colorado for medalist honors.

"We played better as a group today," said Gonzaga head coach Brad Rickel. "We still are making too many mental mistakes and not respecting tough pins, but I'm glad we moved up. Alice had a solid tournament, but we do need someone to go low each day if we want to finish higher at these tough events."

Gonzaga will have one more tune-up before the WCC Championships begin. They'll head to the Hawaiian Islands March 23-25 for the Anuenue Spring Break Classic, held on The Bay Course at Kapalua Resort in Maui.
