Three Zags Earn WCC Academic Honors

SAN BRUNO, Calif.—Three Gonzaga University women's tennis players were honored for their hard work on and off the courts Thursday as two Bulldogs received West Coast Conference All-Academic and one more was named All-Academic Honorable Mention by the conference office.

Senior Kylie Peek earned her third consecutive WCC All-Academic title after winning it as both a sophomore and a junior. A public relations major, Peek has kept a 3.92 GPA throughout her four years at GU and is on track to graduate in May. She's been just as successful on the court as she has in the classroom; the Park City, Utah, native posted 53 singles wins and 48 doubles victories in her career at GU. As a senior, she equaled a career best by going 17-8 individually with 12 of those wins coming in dual play during 2014-15. Peek also set a career mark with 15 doubles wins, going 11-7 during the dual season.

Melanie Yates earned her second straight All-Academic award in 2015. Through three years at Gonzaga, Yates has tallied 3.90 GPA while studying biology. During her junior season, Yates reached double-digit singles wins for the third year in a row despite playing singles in just one tournament. She went 10-10 overall and 9-9 in dual play, including wins over conference foes from Pacific, Santa Clara, and #58 San Francisco. Over her three years, Yates has posted 34 wins in singles play and 30 in doubles.

Last but not least, Franziska Koehler earned her first academic award, picking up All-Academic Honorable Mention honors from the WCC. A junior psychology major, Koehler has maintained a 3.44 GPA through her three years at Gonzaga. On the court, 2014-15 was the best season of her career as she set career highs with 18 singles and 19 doubles wins. Her doubles tally equaled the school record for most pairs wins in a single season after going 8-6 in fall tournament and 11-7 during dual play. Individually, the Warstein, Germany, native went 12-6 in dual play, giving the Zags a force in the bottom half of the lineup.
