DAVIS, Calif. - Gonzaga women's tennis incoming freshman Sophie Whittle took home medalist honors on Monday at the ITA Summer Circuit event hosted at UC Davis.
Whittle, who signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Zags this fall, dropped just one set in six matches on her way to the title.
After going 6-1, 6-4 over Chloe Sermet in the opening round and 6-2, 6-0 against Cori Sidell in the second round, Whittle came up against Alexandra Solovyev, a sophomore-to-be on the Columbia University tennis team in the quarterfinals. Whittle dropped the first set 5-7, but rolled the rest of the way, beating Solovyev 6-1 in the second set and 10-4 in a super-tiebreaker to advance.
In the semifinals, Whittle faced Vanessa Nommenson, who went 13-10 in dual matches for the Tulane Green Wave last season. Whittle made quick work of Nommenson with a 6-2, 6-4 victory to advance to the finals to face Madison Clarke in the final. Clarke will join Whittle in the West Coast Conference in suiting up for Santa Clara next fall.
Whittle continued her hot streak in the finals with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Clarke to claim the title.
