Zags Fall to Ranked Utah Squad

Jan. 17, 2016

Box Score

SALT LAKE CITY--The Gonzaga University women's tennis team ran up against a tough Utah squad Sunday, falling to the 51st-ranked Utes 6-1 at Eccles Tennis Center in Salt Lake City.

Utah took an early advantage by winning the doubles point, taking the contests on courts two and three by similar 6-4 scores. On court one, the Utes were up on Gonzaga's top pair of Samantha Polayes and Sophie Whittle 5-4, but that match remained unfinished once Utah prevailed in the other two matches.

In singles play, the Utes continued their strong play, winning five of the six individual contests. Gonzaga got its point from the No. 1 singles slot where Whittle beat Utah's Margo Pletcher 6-4, 6-2. At No. 6 singles, fellow freshman Domonique Garley picked up the Zags' other set victory on the day, winning the second set to send her match against Alexia Petrovic into a super tiebreak. The Ute prevailed in the extra frame, however, and took the six-singles match 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (5).

At No. 5 singles, Graciela Rosas won six games before falling to Taylor Calton 6-4, 6-2.

Gonzaga (1-1) will now return to the practice courts for a week and a half before its next contest, a Friday, Jan. 29 date against Inland Northwest foe Montana. That match, GU's home opener, will take place at 3:00 p.m. in The Stevens Center.
