Two Advance to Aggie Invitational Consolation Finals

DAVIS, Calif.--Two Zags saw consolation singles success Saturday, reaching the finals of their respective brackets during day two of the Aggie Invitational held in Davis, California.
Freshman Vincent Rettke reached the A Singles Consolation final after a pair of three-set wins. In the quarterfinals, he bounced back from a 1-6 first set loss to down Santa Clara's Andrew Gu. His semifinal contest against Roy Lederman of Stanford was even more tightly contested as both full sets needed a tiebreak. He lost the first 6-7 (3) before winning the second 7-6 (5) and forcing a third set super tiebreak. The Alabama native then won the race to 10 by two points for the match victory.
In the B Singles Consolation, Sam Feit reached the bracket's final with a pair of straight-set wins. He beat Sacramento State's Donald Hall 6-4, 6-1 in the quarters before downing West Coast Conference foe Matthew Campana 7-5, 6-4 in the semifinals. Also in the flight, Kyle Everly reached the consolation semis after a 6-3, 6-1 straight sets victory. In the semifinals, he fell to Nevada's Kostya Nesterenko in three at 6-4, 5-7, 2-0 (6). Feit and Nesterenko will square off for the consolation's championship at 11:00 a.m. Sunday.
Senior Ronzai Saurombe lost in his C Singles championship match 6-3, 6-4 to Pacific's Nathan Hampton. Saurombe was the only Zag remaining in a main bracket after day one.
In doubles play, Feit and Rettke combined for an 8-2 victory in the A Doubles Consolation bracket, reaching the flight's semifinal. Emilio Moreno and Ruadhan O'Sullivan also advanced in their doubles consolation bracket after their San Francisco opponents withdrew.
Saurombe and Everly, meanwhile, lost a tightly contested match to a pair from Portland 8-7 (5) in the B Doubles Consolation.
The Bulldogs will wrap up their time in Davis Sunday, Oct. 2, with day three of the Aggie Invitational. Doubles play begins at 8:30 a.m., again at Marya Welch Tennis Center.
