Oct. 2, 2016 Gonzaga Match Play Results
SPOKANE, Wash.-The Gonzaga University women's golf team bounced back during day two of its own Gonzaga Match Play, downing Portland State 5-1 at Manito Golf & Country Club.
The Bulldogs earned their points from the first five positions in the lineup. No. 1 player Ciera Min posted the biggest victory on the day, beating Tara Finigan 4&2. Min made the turn 2 up and capped off the match with wins on holes 14 and 16. Also remaining unbeaten during the tournament, Jessica Mangrobang turned a three-hole deficit into a 3&2 victory. After losing three of her first four holes, she rallied to make the turn all square before taking three holes on the back nine for the win.
A pair of Zags won by two over their Portland State foes Sunday as Bianca Pagdanganan beat Valerie Hernandez 2&1 while Nina Novilla held off Taylor Hartley 2 up. Pagdanganan saw three tie scores before putting Hernandez away with a par on No. 17, while Novilla held a lead throughout the match. She made a par on the 18th to confirm the win over Hartley.
Jena Gao also went the distance, fighting off a pair of two-hole deficits before squaring the match with a birdie on the Par-3 12th. She took the lead with another birdie on the Par-5 14th and maintained that advantage for the last five holes.
Portland State's lone point came from the sixth position where Carson Pickett beat Diana Araneta 3&2.
"I'm really happy with how we went about our business today," said Gonzaga women's golf head coach Brad Rickel. "We played a lot better after yesterday's learning experience, and we just settled down and golfed our ball today. Ciera and Jess being 2-0 shows how great they've played."
With the win, the Zags even their record to 1-1 on the weekend. They wrap up their own Gonzaga Match Play on Monday, Oct. 3, with a showdown against West Coast Conference foe and 25th-ranked BYU. The first tee time for that contest is scheduled for 8:52 a.m.
