Gonzaga Falls in Final Match of Season

PROVO, Utah -- The No. 4 Brigham Young women's soccer team captured the West Coast Conference title with a 6-0 victory over Gonzaga Saturday.

The Cougars (16-2-1, 7-1-1 West Coast Conference) won the league title for the fifth straight season. BYU outshot the Zags, 21-10. The Cougars placed eight shots on goal, while GU had three. Brigham Young also had an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Michele Vasconcelos recorded a brace for BYU. The senior found the back of the net in the 18th and 19th minutes. Paige Barker opened the scoring in the 12th minute and added an assist on a Vasconcelos' goal.

Nadia Gomes also had a goal and an assist. She scored the game's fifth goal in the 54th minute, after assisting on Vasconcelos' first goal. Miranda Topham and Ashley Hatch also scored goals in the match. Topham's goal came in the 37th minute, while Hatch completed the scoring in the 72nd minute.

Sabrina Macias made three saves in the BYU net. Sarah Swanson had two stops for Gonzaga (6-10-2, 2-7-0 WCC). Madeline Gotta led the Bulldogs with three shots.

Gonzaga graduates nine talented seniors from the program, but has 18 underclassmen on the roster.
