Fraley Enjoys Incredible Experience

March 11, 2016

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Troy Fraley placed 14th at the USATF Indoor Championships inside the Oregon Convention Center Friday.

Fraley became the first Zag to ever run in the prestigious event. He crossed the line with a time of 8:09.13. The junior was the only collegian in the 16-runner field.

"This was an incredible experience," Fraley said. "This was something I can build off of for the rest of my running career! Someday I plan to be back to this venue and be more of a factor. Representing GU in this race was an awesome feeling, and I am so happy to be able to spread the buzz about our program! Lining up next to Olympians has left me with a new appreciation for this wonderful sport. I'm grateful for my teammates' support and Coach (Pat) Tyson's support as well as the Gonzaga athletic department!"

Fraley was in a field that included four Olympians, four members of last summer's World Outdoor U.S. team, runners with seven of the top-10 times in U.S. history, three individuals who hold a combined 10 American records (indoors and outdoors) and the 2015 NCAA champion.

Ryan Hill entered as the favorite and finished first at 7:38.60. He edged out Paul Chelimo (7:39.00) at the line. Hill and Chelimo will now represent the United States at next week's Indoor World Championships on the same track in Portland.

"Troy fought hard," Tyson said. He was bold! It was not his best time, but he went out hard with a 4:12 first mile. He beat a Colorado graduate who was a 3:58 miler and an All-American. Troy got his feet wet against some of the toughest competition in the world! This venue will only make Troy better. He will really grow as an elite runner. I'm so proud of him!"
