SPOKANE, Wash.--The Gonzaga University women's tennis team picked up its ninth win in a row Sunday, sweeping Weber State in the non-conference finale at The Stevens Center.
GU began the match by sweeping the doubles point. On court one, Samantha Polayes and Sophie Whittle returned to their winning ways, brushing aside Sara parker and Kristi Elmer 6-1. The Wildcats held their first serve, but the top Bulldog duo broke every serve after for the win. At No. 2 doubles, Melanie Yates and Alex Bourguignon clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 victory, their seventh of the dual season.
On court three, Sissi Koehler and Domonique Garley clinched the sweep, doubling up their Weber State foes at 6-3. They've put together 13 wins on the year, second-most behind Polayes and Whittle's school-record 21.
Gonzaga's stellar doubles play continued into the morning's individual contests. Once again, GU's Nos. 5 and 6 players gave the Bulldogs early points as Garley and Graciela Rosas picked up quick wins. Garley ceded one early game to opponent Morgan Dicason and swept through the rest, posting a 6-1, 6-0 tally. That was her ninth win of the dual season, all of which have come during GU's win streak. Rosas, meanwhile, earned her 10th win in dual play with a 6-0, 6-3 tally. In each of her last five matches, she's ceded no more than three games.
On court No. 2, Polayes clinched the match win with her biggest win of the dual year. Polayes swept Elmer in the first set 6-0 and took the second by a break for a 6-0, 6-4 tally. A senior, GU's career singles wins leader has six wins in the dual season and 15 overall so far.
Bourguignon, meanwhile, kept pace with Rosas for the team lead in dual singles victories, also winning her 10th of the season. She dispatched Dominique Beauvais in two sets 6-2, 6-3 on court four Sunday.
Two more Zags picked up wins as Nevada Apollo and Whittle each won in third-set super tiebreaks. Apollo picked up her ninth win of the dual season while Whittle claimed her seventh.
Gonzaga's win streak is the program's longest in 16 years, passing an eight-gamer they posted in 1999-2000. Rosas, Garley, and Bourguignon are also riding nine-match win streaks into conference play.
"It's nice to cap off non-conference play with such a strong match," said GU women's tennis head coach D.J. Gurule. "Now it's time to focus on conference. The season starts now, and we're back to 0-0."
The Zags (10-1) will begin West Coast Conference play in two weeks, hosting San Diego and BYU the first weekend. That match against the Toreros will kick off WCC action and take place Friday, March 25 at 1:00 p.m. in The Stevens Center.
