MORAGA. Calif.--The Gonzaga University women's tennis team was swept for the first time this season Sunday, losing 4-0 to Saint Mary's at the Korth Tennis Complex in Moraga.
Saint Mary's opened the match by winning the doubles point. They won on court No. 1 to begin the dual as Samantha Polayes and Sophie Whittle won two games in a 6-2 loss to Clementine Clement and Emma Critser. At No. 3 doubles, Sissi Koehler and Domonique Garley won three games, but they lost to Parminder Kaur and Kareena Manji by a 6-3 scoreline.
On court two, Melanie Yates and Alex Bourguignon were trailing 5-4 when their match was stopped.
In singles play, the Gaels took the first three matches to finish for the win. At No. 6 singles, Garley's 15-match win streak was snapped with a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Manji. The loss was Garley's first since Jan. 17; she had won all 15 of her completed matches since.
Saint Mary's added another point on court two where Polayes also fell in two sets, but she pushed Jana McCord in the second set. After droping the first 6-2, Polayes won five games in the second, forcing McCord into an extra game before falling 6-2, 7-5. The Gaels clinched the dual win on court five where Graciela Rosas won eight games - four in each set - but lost 6-4, 6-4 to Critser.
At No. 1 singles, Whittle held a set lead on Jamie Pawid and was up 3-0 in the second before that match was halted. Bourguignon was on her third set after winning the first and losing the second, and Nevada Apollo trailed Clement by a set when both of those contests were stopped and left unfinished.
Despite the loss, however, the Zags (15-4, 5-3 WCC) remain tied with the Gaels for second place in the WCC standings with one match remaining in the regular season. That contest will take place Saturday, April 23, at The Stevens Center as the Zags host Portland. Prior to the 11:00 a.m. match, the three seniors - Koehler, Polayes, and Yates - will be honored for their four years of dedication to Gonzaga tennis.
