LOS ANGELES-The Gonzaga University men's tennis team wrapped up the 2015-16 season Sunday by pushing No. 69 Loyola Marymount during singles play but falling 5-0 at the LMU Tennis Center.
The Lions began the match by winning both doubles contests to finish by similar 6-2 scorelines. Court one finished first while the No. 2 doubles contest finished shortly after. The third doubles contest, Vicente Varas and Ronzai Saurombe versus Lukas Moenter and Luke Bohuslav, remained unfinished with the Bulldogs' duo hanging tough, down one game at 3-4.
In singles play, Gonzaga forced four third sets, but the Lions won the four contests which finished. Loyola Marymount picked up two-set wins at Nos. 5 and 1 singles while all the others went three. At No. 2 singles, freshman Ruadhan O'Sullivan forced an extra game in the first set and won his second set 4-6, but his opponent Errol Smith won the deciding set at 6-3.
That win on court two clinched the win for LMU, but on court No. 6, Saurombe lost just shortly after O'Sullivan's match wrapped up. Saurombe took his first set against Jamie Thorp by a 4-6 scoreline, but Thorp took the final two sets for the Lions' fifth point of the day.
On court three, senior Hayden Smith was trailing 5-3 in his final collegiate match; after dropping the first set, he took the second in an extra game at 5-7 to force that third. Down one court, at No. 4 singles, freshman Emilio Moreno took his first set with a 3-6 scoreline, but he dropped the second and was trailing in the third by a game when that contest was left unfinished.
With the loss, the Zags wrap up the 2016 season with a 5-15 record and a 2-7 mark in dual play. Jordan Smith ends the year with the best overall singles record on the team at 17-11 while O'Sullivan posted the best dual mark at 13-7. The Smiths led the way in both overall and dual doubles victories, going 14-8 overall and 9-6 during the spring, including a 4-3 mark in conference matches.
Gonzaga now says goodbye to two graduating seniors: Hayden Smith and Vicente Varas, who both played their final collegiate matches Sunday. The Zags will also add three incoming freshmen â€" Samuel Feit, Simon Homedes, and Vincent Rettke â€" for the 2016-17 season.
