Women's Soccer Releases 2016 Schedule

July 1, 2016

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga women's soccer team announced their 19-match 2016 schedule Tuesday. The Zags will welcome nine opponents to Luger Field this upcoming season, with six games under the new lights at GU's soccer complex.

"We can't wait for the 2016 home season-opener under the new lights," Gonzaga women's soccer Head Coach Amy Edwards said. "The non-conference schedule has a host of quality opponents to prepare us for an always challenging WCC slate of games."

The Bulldogs host four non-conference opponents and five West Coast Conference programs in 2016. Gonzaga will play in six states this season, including the program's first trip to Hawaii. Outside of conference action, the Zags' upcoming slate features four Big Sky Conference members, three Mountain West Conference teams, a pair of Pac-12 programs, and one from the Western Athletic Conference.

Gonzaga played one of the region's toughest schedules last season, and welcomes back key experience from that squad. Christie Tombari led the West Coast Conference with 101 saves, an average of 5.32 per game. Her 101 saves rank ninth on the program's all-time list for most saves in a single season. The incoming redshirt senior is fourth in program history with 269 saves in her career, and sixth with a 1.53 goals against average.

Karley Baggerly was tabbed Second Team All-West Coast Conference. She was second in the WCC with eight goals in the regular season, and was second in the conference averaging 1.47 shots on goal per game. Her 18 points this season were the third-most in the conference during the regular season, while her 52 shots were fifth.

Gonzaga opens the schedule with a pair of games at the Outrigger Resorts Soccer Classic hosted by the University of Hawaii. The Zags play Nevada on Aug. 19, before facing Oregon two days later. GU starts the season against Nevada for the second straight year, after playing to a 1-1 draw in Reno in 2015. Oregon and the Bulldogs meet for the first time since 2012, and only the second time in the past nine years.

The Zags visit Idaho on Aug. 26. Last season, the Vandals were the Big Sky regular season champions after going 9-0-1 in league play and 14-4-3 overall. GU has won the last three meetings between the programs by an 11-2 margin.

Gonzaga opens its home schedule under the lights against Washington State on Aug. 28. The Cougars went 14-6 last year, including an impressive 7-4 in the difficult Pac-12, which earned them a berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Back-to-back Big Sky opponents, Eastern Washington and Portland State, follow on Sept. 2 and 4. The Eagles won 12 games last season and finished third in the Big Sky. GU boasts a 12-match win streak against EWU, and has won nine of the 14 meetings with Portland State all-time. The Zags and PSU last met in 2010, a 1-0 GU win in Spokane.

Gonzaga returns to the road at Utah State and Montana on Sept. 9 and 11. The Bulldogs and USU drew even at 1-1 last season in Spokane. The Aggies had a winning record last season with 10 victories. The Grizzlies ended their 2015 season in the Big Sky Conference semifinals with a loss to Idaho.

On Sept. 15, Boise State comes to Luger Field for the first time in four years. GU has won six of the eight all-time meetings between the programs. Three days later the Bulldogs close their non-conference schedule at Seattle University. The Redhawks escaped Spokane with a 1-0 win last season, before winning the WAC regular season title for the third straight season.

Gonzaga opens conference play against Loyola Marymount in Spokane on Sept. 30. The Lions roared all the way to Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament and finished the season 15-6-1. They went 7-2 in conference play, finishing second in the league. Pepperdine follows on the GU slate on Oct. 2.

The Bulldogs welcome Portland for their lone match of the week on Oct. 8. The Pilots outlasted GU last season, 1-0, in Portland. The following week, Gonzaga travels to San Diego for another lone game of the week on Oct. 15. The Zags beat USD in Spokane in 2015, 2-1. GU has won back-to-back meetings with the Toreros.

Gonzaga closes its regular season home schedule against Saint Mary's and Pacific on Oct. 21 and 23. The Bulldogs are unbeaten in their last three matchups with SMC.

The Zags end their regular season schedule against three of the top four finishers in last year's WCC standings, and all on the road. On Oct. 28, GU visits Santa Clara, a team that won 14 games last season and ended its schedule in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Broncos escaped Spokane with a 3-2 double-overtime win in 2015. Gonzaga is at San Francisco on Oct. 30. The Dons finished second in the conference last season and also left Spokane with a 3-2 narrow win.

In the regular season finale, GU is at last season's WCC champion, BYU. The Cougars won 16 games last year and ended their season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
