WAIPAHU, Hawaii -- Sarah Carter's first collegiate goal led the Gonzaga women's soccer team to a season-opening 1-0 victory over Nevada in the first game of the Outrigger Resorts Soccer Classic hosted by the University of Hawaii Friday.
In the Zags' (1-0) first-ever match in Hawaii, Carter found the back of the net in the 26th minute. The senior brought in a pass from Savanah Van Citters and struck it from the corner of the 18-yard box into the goal.
"That goal was fantastic," GU Head Coach Amy Edwards said. "It was a corner kick play that was executed perfectly. It was a textbook goal."
The Zag defense stymied Nevada. GU's defense allowed only four shots with just one on frame. Making her first collegiate start, Sarah Swanson stopped the lone shot that came her way. After not posting a shutout last season, the Bulldogs recorded their first shutout since a 2-0 win at San Diego on Oct. 9, 2014.
Gonzaga's Karley Baggerly led all players with three shots, placing one on goal. Kristin Standish took two shots. Hannah Wuensche had two of Nevada's four shots.
The Zags took 13 shots in the game, putting seven on frame. Kelsey Quintos made six saves for the Wolf Pack. Nevada (0-1) took seven corner kicks, to GU's three.
"Without playing an exhibition, we saw some issues that we can work on going forward," Edwards said. "But, we also saw a lot of passion with how we played today. If we continue to play with that passion, and tweak some things on both sides of the ball, there's real confidence moving forward. Another positive from today was the improved leadership we had on the field."
The Zags play Oregon in the third game of the Outrigger Resorts Soccer Classic Sunday at 4:30 p.m. Pacific Time. The Ducks opened their season against Hawaii in the second match of the classic Friday. Live stats will be available on GoZags.com.
