WAIPAHU, Hawaii -- The Gonzaga women's soccer team fell to Oregon, 2-1, in the third game of the Outrigger Resorts Soccer Classic Sunday.
The Ducks (1-0-1) scored both of their goals in the first half, before holding off GU in the final 45 minutes. Oregon outshot the Zags, 12-10, placing four shots on goal, while Gonzaga had two shots on frame.
Jayne Lydiatt put the Ducks ahead just three minutes into the game. Ashlee Schulz and Marissa Everett were both credited with an assist on the play, which Lydiatt brought in a pass in the 18-yard box and scored her first goal of the young season.
In the 27th minute, Oregon's Kyra Fawcett scored her second goal of the season. She struck a ball outside of the 18, and put it into the top left-hand corner of the net.
Fourteen minutes into the second half, Lauren Luke brought the Bulldogs back into the match. The senior scored on a header in the box off of a free-kick from Sarah Carter. It was her fifth career goal, but first since 2012. It was Carter's fourth career assist.
Sarah Swanson made two saves for Gonzaga (1-1-0), and the Ducks' Katelyn Carter stopped one shot. Oregon had a slim 4-3 edge in corner kicks taken.
"I am disappointed with our team giving too much respect to Oregon in the first half, but I am encouraged by our response in the second half," GU Head Coach Amy Edwards said. "We needed this experience playing two quality teams in Hawaii to challenge us early in the season. It will help us grow and be a better version of ourselves each day and each game."
Following the fourth and final game of the classic, Gonzaga's Callie Best and Sarah Carter were named to the 11-member All-Tournament Team.
Gonzaga returns to the pitch at Idaho Friday. The Vandals (1-1-0) beat Grand Canyon at home Sunday, 3-1. Live stats for Friday's match will be available on GoZags.com.
