Aggie Invitational Results and Draws
DAVIS, Calif.-The Gonzaga University men's tennis team started play at the Aggie Invitational Friday with Ronzai Saurombe advancing to the final of his bracket at Marya Welch Tennis Center in Davis, California.
The squad's only senior, Saurombe advanced to the championship match of the C Singles bracket with a pair of wins over West Coast Conference foes. In the first round â€" the quarterfinals of the eight-man bracket â€" Saurombe downed Portland's Goutham Sundaram by a 6-3, 7-5 tally to move on. Later in the afternoon, he beat Daniel Krutik of Saint Mary's in straight sets. He'll face Nathan Hampton of Pacific in the final.
In the B Singles flight, two Bulldogs are alive in the consolation bracket. After losing their main draw contests to seeded opponents, freshmen Sam Feit and Kyle Everly bounced back with consolation wins later in the day. Feit came from behind to down Nevada's Sandro Lena in a third set tiebreaker. Lena took the first set 3-6, but Feit countered with a 6-3 win in the second before claiming the super tiebreak 10-8. Everly, meanwhile, beat Portland's Jared Madison in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
Fellow freshman Vincent Rettke is still competing in the A Singles Consolation after beating WCC opponent Alex Giannini of Pacific in three sets. Giannini took the first frame 2-6, but Rettke countered with a 6-3 win in the second and 10-5 victory in the super tiebreak. During his main bracket match, Rettke forced set tiebreaks in both frames before falling to the Wolfpack's Robert Margitfalvi 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5).
Two Zags fell in both singles matches they played Friday. Ruadhan O'Sullivan lost to foes from Santa Clara and UC Davis in the A Singles bracket while Emilio Moreno fell to opponents from Saint Mary's and Sacramento State in B Singles.
In doubles play, Feit and Rettke competed in the A flight, falling 8-3 to David Goulak and Tommy Lam from host school UC Davis. Two pairs - Everly/Saurombe and Moreno/O'Sullivan â€" also dropped into the consolation bracket in B doubles.
Gonzaga will continue the Aggie Invitational with day two of the tournament on Saturday, Oct. 1. Doubles play begins at 8:30 a.m. while singles competitions will start at 10:00 a.m., again at Marya Welch Tennis Center.
