LOGAN, Utah -- Utah State women's soccer's Wesley Hamblin scored the game-winning goal three minutes into overtime to escape with a 2-1 home win over Gonzaga Friday.
The Aggies' (3-3-0) Jessica Brooksby recorded her third and fourth assists of the season on the pair of USU goals. Brooksby now has eight points this season. She connected with Hamblin in the 93rd minute for the game-winner. Brooksby drove a long ball through the middle of the field and Hamblin struck into the net. It was Hamblin's first goal of the season.
Despite being outshot 9-3 in the first half, Utah State opened the scoring just seconds before halftime. Jayn Robison-Merrill found the back of the net for the second time this season off of an assist by Brooksby.
Two minutes into the second half, Karley Baggerly scored her fourth goal of the season and evened the match at one. Baggerly now has 22 goals in her GU career.
Gonzaga (3-2-1) led on the attacking front with a 22-9 advantage in shots. The Zags placed nine shots on goal, compared to USU's seven. GU's 22 shots were most taken since the Bulldogs had 28 versus Utah State in a 1-1 double-overtime draw last season in Spokane on Sept. 6.
The Zags forced Utah State's Grace McGuire into eight saves. Sarah Swanson and Allison Seifert split time in the GU net. Seifert made four saves, while Swanson had one in the first half. Gonzaga took all six of the corner kicks in the match.
"We certainly had our chances, but mental mistakes got the best of us at critical times today," GU Head Coach Amy Edwards said. "We will rebound for our match on Sunday."
