SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga women's soccer team fell to BYU, 6-3, in front of a season-high crowd at Luger Field Thursday.
The Cougars (6-6-4, 3-2-1 West Coast Conference) and Gonzaga combined for 39 shots in the showcase of offense. The teams played in front of 1,019 fans, the largest crowd at Luger Field since the record-breaking turnout on Sept. 12, 2014, when the Zags hosted Washington State with a crowd of 1,441. Thursday's match was also televised nationally on ESPNU.
Gonzaga's Jodi Ulkekul opened the scoring just three minutes into the game. Her first goal of the season came on a strike to the far post. In the 34th minute, Elise Flake slid a pass through the GU defense and Cameron Tucker drove it low and into the net for the equalizer.
The teams then exploded for six goals over a 15-minute span in the second half. Mikayla Colohan put BYU ahead in the 60th minute. Two minutes later, Gonzaga's Hope Tsuneyoshi scored her first collegiate goal on a loose ball in front of the net after a corner kick. Flake scored less than a minute later on a strike past the keeper.
In the 67th minute, Madie Mathews scored her seventh goal of the season for BYU. Bulldog freshman Jordan Thompson recorded her first collegiate goal on a penalty kick in the 70th minute. Colohan found the net again in the 74th minute, before Nadia Gomes completed the scoring in the 81st minute.
Savanah Van Citters and Callie Best were credited with assists on Tsuneyoshi's goal, bringing GU's season total to 30, which breaks the program's single-season assist record. The Zags have also broken the single-season goals (38) and points (106) records this year.
Gonzaga (10-6-1, 2-5-0 WCC) finished with 10 shots on goal Thursday, while BYU had 12. Hannah Clark made seven saves for the Cougars. Isabel Jones had five for the Bulldogs.
The Zags welcome San Diego (7-9-0, 5-1-0) for Senior Night Saturday. The Toreros won at Portland, 1-0, Thursday. GU will honor Van Citters, Sarah Swanson, Mari Kneisel and Tianna Helm prior to Saturday's game at 7 p.m. Live video and stats will be available on GoZags.com.
